There are some reasons to prefer perennials rather than annuals or anything else. Here is a list of those reasons:
Annuals do not provide periodic support for the plant life that they provide shade and privacy. Perennials are generally year-round plants and grow all year long, providing the proper amount of moisture and growth for the growth of their flowers.
Perennials also offer a type of support for shade trees, such as shade begonia and plants with winter-flowering bulbs such as trilliums, which cannot tolerate being out in the sun all winter long. Unlike annuals, most plants do not need to be planted in pots. Most will thrive in containers that have been prepared just for them.
Gardeners will find that most perennials are drought tolerant. Many species are capable of surviving for many years without any water and then come back to life again in the spring to provide another bloom. For this reason, most perennial plants are now more popular than ever before because they provide such regular comfort and beauty.
Now, if you have ever had a very hot summer, you know that the fall months often feel like hell. The days are hot, and you do not have enough air conditioning to keep the heat at bay. Just think of how hot it would be on a cold day, even with the windows open. You would not want to spend most of your summer walking through hot grass in the heat.
You would want to curl up with a good book under the open sky or on a warm cushion by the pool, even with the cool night air. But, you are in the middle of the Midwest, and the summer temperatures are nearly unbearable, yet you know you can’t take off the shades, get up, or even let yourself sweat.
You have a window air conditioner, a nice comfortable chair, and a small electric heater in the kitchen. Do you suppose you could sleep all night outdoors and enjoy the cool breeze on your face and the softness of the ground? If you had a bunch of nice, colorful, fragrant perennials growing in your garden, you would!
If you could open the shades and let yourself go, then you could get away from all the mess and heat of the summer and enjoy all the cool air that would come in the autumn and winter. You would not have to worry about going to the store, trying to work out, or putting on any clothes because you would be able to relax outside, wear a beautiful flower in your hair, or head to a nice restaurant with a garden full of lovely, green flowers.
In the early part of the year, you will find that the air is still dry, and the ground is very dry, but because the rains come later in the year, they become too much of a nuisance for the garden. Now, if you plant a bunch of nice, lush perennial flowers in the summer, these will provide a huge relief. You could sit outside all day, enjoying the cool evening breeze, and enjoy your annuals instead of struggling with the problem of the wet ground that causes so much stress.
It is important to remember that if you have ambitious perennials in your garden, then you may have to choose perennials that require watering all the time because this may prove to be a difficult task. If you are only interested in one kind of perennial plant, you might want to choose one that only needs a little water, and the rest of the year, the ground is dry.
Perennials do not have to be large or long-lived. Some are only a few weeks old and provide gorgeous blooms and year-round comfort. Plant them to make your garden a peaceful and comfortable garden.
